RW and Melvin

April 01, 2012
By Nfk

in the last couple of chapter R.W. and Melvin act like there T.J.'s friend then in the end they turn on him and start stealing mone. Then they don't confess that it was them instead they go and help get T.J. To go and hurt him. Why don't you think they didn't just tell them it was them?

Yes, I know what your answer is they just didn't want to get in trouble but don't you think it would be hard for them not to tell don't you think they would have heavy hearts? Even if they did tell would they get in very big trouble because they are white instead of blackif not they would at least not get as big of a punishment. Well I am happy we finished the book yay another good book.

Week 6: Mama's thoughts

April 01, 2012
By MGW

Well, I kind of just thought of a random thing to post on, and I didn't have my book, so I was just thinking over chapter twelve one last time. I was really stuck until I thought of this...

What do you think Mama thought when Cassie asked if their taxes would get paid? I mean, maybe it is kind of a stupid question, but think about it. How would you feel if you were Mama and your daughter comes up to you and asks if you would be able to support the taxes? I would probably feel like my child were learning WAY too much in school. The book never really gives a clear explanation of what Mama was thinking, so I thought I would just ask to see what would come up.

Week 6: Hammer's thoughts

April 01, 2012
By MGW

Well, when I read the part in chapter ten when Uncle Hammer sold his car, I must admit that I was kind of sad. I mean, that car was Uncle Hammer's pride and joy. I know why he had to sell it, and it was for a good cause. But that just made me kind of sad. What did you think about that?

Week 6: Mr. Granger's Words

April 01, 2012
By JosB

When the whites were going to hang T.J., Mr. Morrison, and Papa, Harlan Granger said this:

"I won't stand for no hanging on my place. If you touch one hair on that boy's head while on this land, I'm gonna hold everyone responsible"

Does Mr. Granger mean that he wants no hanging at all? Or is he saying that if the hanging isn't done on his land, he's OK with it? If you were Harlan, what would you say?

Well, as I understand, Mr. Granger probably thinks that TJ is the criminal because he doesn't know the true story. I think that If I was thinking that way, I would want some punishment, but not hanging. I would want nothing to do with it on my land, but I wouldn't want any hanging at all.

Week 6: Working Together

April 01, 2012
By JosB

When the whites and blacks hear of the cotton fire, all of a sudden they all start woking together. I thought this was really neat because even though there is so much tension between these two different races, their only mission is to get the fire out. If you had a life or death circumstance that you had to fight, and your worst enemy was working right beside you, would you treat him/her as if they were your best friend? Would you even fight?

I would say that if this was happening to me, I would just say nothing at all to them while working. Even though I would be fighting, I probably would leave whatever I had to say to them to myself in this kind of situation. My only goal would be to get whatever I was fighting defeated.

After TJ noticed that Stacey was his true friend, do you think he was upset? How do you think TJ feels about RW and Melvins lie and how do you think he felt about being pulled out of his house and watching his family get hurt because of what he did.

WK 6- MR. MORRISON

March 29, 2012
By LS

In the chapters of 10-11, you "see" more of Mr. Morrison. He first saves himself and Papa and Stacey then he protects the family even though Mama said he should leave. Do you think it was good for Mr. Morrison to stay or should he have left? Do you think he will still be able to protect them if something terrible happens?

week 6: FIRE

April 01, 2012
By hb

Wow! That took some juts to start that fire. Everyone thinks that the lightning started the fire. So did I. I didn't even think about what started it until Mrs. Philipsen talked about it in class, and we got to the part that Mr. Jamison started talking about to go see T.J. Then we realized that Papa started the fire. That was a good way to get the fight to stop. Papa saved the Avery family with sacrificing his land...the thing that the family really need right now to get money!

week 6: End of Book

April 01, 2012
By hb

I really loved this book! The only thing that I didn't like was the fact that we have no clue what happens to T.J.! Thinking about T.J. what do you think will happen to T.J.? Will he die? Or will he be 'lucky' and stay in jail? And now I really want to know what the Logan family will do for money! They lost a quarter of the cotton, mama doesn't have a job....papa has to leave to work at the railroad....what's going to happen?

Papa started the fire to distract the whites from beating up T.J. and his family from death or jail with terrible injury. Mama and Big Ma where like the people to see the fire and prepared for the worst. Mama didn't want them near the fire. This is a big incident that happened that night just because T.J. wanted to feel good about himself. Well T.J. is in jail now and in for a worser fate. What will happen to T.J.?

week 6: Logan family+Mr.Morrison

March 29, 2012
By hb

When Cassie, Little Man, and Christerpher John come home in the middle of the night. What do you think is running through Pappa's, mama's, and Big ma's heads? Then when Cassie tells them the wholde story, what do you think they all thought about it? What about when Cassie adds the part where they talk about coming to get Mr. Morrison and Papa. Then Papa decides to go to find Stacey! Mama says to papa to get Mr. Granger to stop the whites. Do you think that Mr. Granger will stop them? When we read that part I immediatly thought that Mr. Granger would do it, IF he got the land. Then this fire starts. All the people are there trying to fight the fire. What do you think happened to the Avery family? Did the fire save T.J, Mr. Morrison, and Papa?

I would be so worried and scared to my stomach if my kids were gone in the middle of the night. If I was Mr. Morrison or Papa, my heart would immediatly stop! I wouldn't know were to go, or what to do! I would want to run away but still be there for my family. I think the fire saved Mr. Morrison and Papa some time, but only a little. As for T.J. I don't know about him. Something tells me that something happened to him, but I don't know!

Week 6: Friendship

March 29, 2012
By hb

Well R.W. and Melvin. Wow! Why did they do that! How would you feel if your friends told on you about the gun and they were apart of it? Do you think that R.W.and Melvin wore a face mask on purpose? Why would they do that? Would have you done what Stacey and the rest of the Logan kids did to T.J.? They arn't even friends anymore! What do you think was going through all of the Logan kids when they saw the whites hurt T.J. If you were Stacey watching one of your best friends since you were little, getting kicked at and thrown around like that, what would you do? Do you think that Stacey would have gone in there if he could of? But the question that I really want to ask is this: If it was the other way around with Stacey in T.J.'s possition and T.J. in Stacey's possition, what do you think T.J. would do? Would he just walk away from the scene? Or would he try to go get help like the Logan kids did? What would he do?

If I was T.J. I would feel betrayed, like I never had anyfriends in the first place, and feel really bad all of a sudden about what I did to the Logan family to through away such good friends. I do think that R.W. and Melvin wore the masks on purpose, just in case this kinda thing happened they could do this. I would try to get him home, but I don't know what I would do! I would be so scared if this happened to any of my friends, I wouldn't of known what to do, but in this case I think Stacey really used his brain. What was going through there heads was wow this is actually our lives, this is how the whites treat us, but yet I don't know how I would react to this kind of situation. I really do think that Stacey would have gone to help his friend, but he thought it all through. (If he goes in there then he could be acused of being the 2nd or 3rd person). Judging T.J. on his personality, I really don't think he would have done half of what Stacey is doing for T.J. T.J. would have probably took Stacey home but once this 'fight' broke out, I am guessing he would run as fast as he could cause he wouldn't want to get caught in the middle  of this thing. But then the other side of me thinks that he might have done a little more for him, if all of a sudden he would think Stacey needs my help, I need to help him. So I guess I am a walffler on thsi question.

Week 6: The Fire

April 01, 2012
By ART

Okay, I cannot believe that Papa lit the fire just to stop the fighting! And he also put the land, and there family on the line doing so! But, . . . .

Would you have done the same thing under the same circumstances?

And do you think Papa did the right thing under these circumstances?

WEEK 6: Last words...

March 31, 2012
By KMK

Cassie had said towards the end of the book that she never really liked T.J. but he would always still be a part in her life. How do you think they Logan family felt when they found out that T.J. was for sure going to jail for something he mostly didn't do?

How would you feel if you were T.J?

I think this book had a good ending, because it was kind of a cliff hanger...but yet, you kind of know what and how the people are going to respond...I'm really tempted to read the next book, because I loved this book!

What did you guys think of the book?

Wk 6- Mr. Granger

March 29, 2012
By KF

When the white folk wanted to hang the Averys and Mr. Morrison why do you think Mr. Granger didn't want them to? I bet R.W. and Melivin told the rest of the Wallaces the T.J. robbed the store. How would you react if someone blamed you for something you know that they did? I would have made my opinion know, for sure. Do you think R.W. and Melvin felt guilty at all? I don't. They just thought it was like blaming a dog for burning the house down. They don't care about black people.

Week 6: Fire

March 29, 2012
By KAW

Wow that was a very big twist from everyone fighting to kill TJ to help stop the fire. I think that's the first time that they have worked together and it just shows that we are a lot stronger when we work together.  In this book I feel like this is something that God would do in our lives. From all of a sudden theres a lightning bolt that just so happens to hit a pole making a spark. Then it rains and everyone gets happy. Have you ever had that, your fighting with someone and then everything seems good all of a sudden.  I'm still not very happy that we had to stop right then when it said that TJ was hurt. I want to know what Hellenes to him. What do you think happened to him.

Week 6: T.J.

March 29, 2012
By ART

Oh my goodness! I cannot believe what the Simmses did to T.J.! I wonder how afraid he is? And if you were the Logans, would you have helpled T.J.? Why?

I would help him, because he was in a really tough situation, and for once, he wanted to the right thing. And, even though he got Mama fired, he still is there friend, and T.J. still considers the Logans as his friends.
