A Brief History
In 1903 a movement began to organize a society for primary Christian instruction. In due time a school board was chosen, and it was decided that a school building should be acquired. The board bought the vacant Ward School (public), a two-room school located in north Orange City.
Orange City Christian School officially opened its doors on September 5, 1904, dedicated to providing Christian instruction for children, so that they may occupy their places worthily in society, church, and state, and which has as its basis the infallible Word of God as interpreted by the doctrinal standards of the Reformed churches.
However, the beginning of Christian education in Orange City had a very serious dilemma, the building was too small. There was not enough room to accommodate the enrollment of 100 students. This dilemma was temporarily handled with the addition of two more rooms during the first year of existence.
Throughout the years that followed, enrollment continued to increase. In 1955 a new nine-room school building was completed. Enrollment continued to climb and reached its peak in 1964 with 392 students. As a result, many additions and improvements have been made in our present school building. We give God the praise and glory for his blessings and guidance throughout our school history.
Despite the many changes in student numbers, building size, and personnel, we remain steadfast in our commitment to provide Christian instruction for our children. Our purpose remains unchanged: equipping students with knowledge, skills and values to serve God and others.
Home, Church, and School
Since its founding, Orange City Christian School has affirmed that the responsibility for educating children belongs first to parents. The church, too, bears a large responsibility for nurturing God?s children. The task takes on new challenges in a culture that does not support Christian faith.
OCCS joins hands with the Christian parents and churches to participate in educating the children of God?s covenant. We offer the expertise of a professional teaching staff and a committed Board of Directors. Our students explore all of reality from a biblical and Reformed perspective.
At OCCS, children are challenged to become what God intends for his people. The school is in the ?real world? where children are able to experience the fullness of childhood. Character is shaped as they learn from their mistakes as well as from their successes and achievements.
Excellent education at OCCS is not something we enjoy only for our own families, but something to be preserved and promoted. Because Christ our King instills in us hope for the future, we invest time, prayer, and resources in education. We welcome every family who joins us and expect a high degree of participation and commitment.
